Corriedale Ram Crowhill will be moving on to greener pastures. Check out the Corriedale page to see who will be taking over his job this winter.

Ram on the left is a two year old and was sheared in March. The ram on the right is a yearling and was sheared in August. See the "Black Welsh Mountain" page to see which rams will be the main players in this winter's breeding program.

Shearing 2011

Most of the white sheep here are Corriedale yearlings.
The one in centre looking at me is a 2 year old Columbia.

Shearing was March 11. The wool was exceptional this year - a full 12 month growth and next to no blown in field dirt, since there was lots of moisture in the fall and winter. I will try to deal quickly with the wool and have it all sorted, weighed and bagged before lambing commences.

The Black Welsh will start lambing in late April and the Corriedales a few weeks later. The small group with the Blue Face Leicester ram will lamb out late in May.

There's still to much snow to work on fences. But I will be able to do some clean up work in the sheds and buildings. So far, weather has been sunny and windy, meaning there's a slow steady snow melt.

Here's a good close up of the rams wool in the deep of winter. The longest is around the shoulders and brisket area. The horns on the left animal are showing signs of wear and tear from the rutting season.

Getting ready for breeding season

Basil Ranfurly will be servicing a small flock of Corriedale ewes this winter. We look forward to introducing Blue Face Leicesters into the wool characteristics of our spinners flock. Basil came to us from Ranfurly Farm in Chase, BC.

Last Corrie Lamb of the Season

Farmer Bob with "Zanzibar" the last born of the 2010 lambing season.

I finally caught the Corriedale lamb that was born a couple weeks ago. I can't believe his weight. He's almost more than I can carry. Farmer Bob held him and I got his bands on. He'll be a wether that I'll have my eye on at shearing time next spring. He comes from a line of lovely fleeces on his maternal side.
